04/18/2006: "I can't tell you what to do"

Yahoo recently changed their membership policy fine print. Since they did this on a day when I was particularly bored, I actually read it. It was mostly pretty standard, but there was one thing that I found odd. In the agreement, it says that users of the ads (e.g. me) are not allowed to tell their visitors to click on the ads. You're not even allowed to say something like, "And if you want to support the site, please click on the ads." (I assume I can post an example of what I cannot say.)

That just seems weird to me. The rule about not clicking on them yourself makes sense, but why can't you beg for clicks? Anyone who is susceptible enough to that kind of persuasion is probably susceptible to product pitches, too, so I would think that businesses would want them to click.

So, while I can't even suggest that you click on the ads, realize that even though I made the ads blend in better, I'm not saying that you shouldn't click on them. It's your choice.
